Of Snowmen [Advent Drabble 7/25]
Of Snowmen

“We are going to the lake before the full moon?” Sungkyu asked, puzzled.

“Yes,” Woohyun answered, tucking a few pairs of extra socks into their suitcases. “It is a tradition that we go as soon as December hits. There are cabins up there that we will be renting. Tablo’s mate even comes with us.”

“Really?” Although Sungkyu was used to the woman’s presence, she tended to be left out of anything that was considered pack business since she was not technically pack. “You never brought me before I was changed,” he tried not to be hurt by that fact.

“Baby,” Woohyun murmured pausing in his packing of their bags so that he could cross the room and loop an arm affectionately around the other wolf’s waist. “Once you knew what I was it was hard enough getting you to be in the same room with me, what would you have done if I asked you to stay in a cabin with a bunch of giant dogs?”

“I wouldn’t have had to know,” Sungkyu huffed.

“Baby you would have known,” Woohyun murmured, leaning in to nibble at his mate’s neck, a privilege that Sungkyu knew thrilled the less dominate wolf. “We have all sorts of traditions for this weekend, on four legs and on two. You would have found out and then I would have killed whoever made you run out of there screaming. We both know that I would be no match for Hoya who would have stuck up for anyone that might have slipped up.”

“Not Sungyeol,” Sungkyu replied, knowing that Woohyun had a good point.

“No probably not,” Woohyun agreed, “But Sungyeol asks for all the trouble he finds himself in.”

“You still could have told me about it,” Sungkyu was trying very hard not to sound like he was whining.

“Think of it this way, it will be a weekend of surprises,” Woohyun purred, pulling his mate’s body closer.

“Will we have our own room?” Sungkyu asked, his arms settling over Woohyun’s shoulders.

“If not we will just kick everyone else out of it,” he growled, and leaned in for a kiss.

A sharp knock on the door interrupted them before they could move beyond the soft press of lips. “Come on!” Sungyeol’s voice carried through the door. “If we are late I’m blaming you two and your dicks!”

“Sungyeol,” Woohyun growled, pulling away from his lover. “You are lucky you are submissive and mated otherwise Sungkyu might kill you.” The wolf knew he was glaring at the door, angry at being interrupted, but he could hardly help it.

Woohyun had returned to throwing clothing into a large duffle bag for their use, and when he was finished he hauled it up and onto his shoulder. “Let’s go baby, before he breaks down the door,” Woohyun said, holding out a hand for his mate.

“Fine,” Sungkyu sighed, not liking the idea of an entirely unknown weekend but knowing there wasn’t a thing he could do about it. At least his mate would be there to keep him company throughout it.

The trip to the lake had been interesting to say the least. With six werewolves shoved into one van, it was a bit too much, pack or not. In fact Sungkyu was sure a fight of some sort would have broken out if there hadn’t been two submissive wolves in the car. Although in retrospect Sungyeol was likely more of a hindrance then he was a help since his energy had an effect of excitement on all of them.

Somehow they had made the three hour trip to the lake in one piece, a feat he didn’t want to try again in the near future, and before the van had even stopped Sungyeol was leaping out of it, landing in the knee deep snow. Immediately the man knelt and began shuffling around in it as the van parked, and the rest of the wolves piled out at a much more sedate pace.

Hoya, who had driven the van, climbed out first and stretched before pulling his mate close for a long hug. Dongwoo put up with it for a moment before squirming away and joining Sungyeol in the snow, dragging his mate after him. Myungsoo, for all of the grumbling he had been doing at Sungyeol’s abrupt departure, shuffled over a moment later to the snow where he was immediately put to work.

Sungkyu watched their interactions with a soft smile. “They are cute aren’t they,” Woohyun murmured from behind him, wrapping his arms around the other man’s waist and settling his chin on his shoulder.

“They are,” he agreed, still somewhat baffled at how a wolf who was as dominate as Hoya could be entirely wrapped around the fingers of the most submissive wolf in their pack.

“Dongwoo sooths a part of Hoya that is always grumpy,” Woohyun answered his unspoken question. “And Sungyeol, well he tends to ruffle a part of Myungsoo that would be cold otherwise, but it works for them.”

“And what about us?” Sungkyu asked, covering his mate’s hands on his stomach. They were the only mated pair with two wolves that were both dominate enough that things could easily go badly between them.

“What about us?” Woohyun growled playfully. “I like our wrestling matches and while you may take them seriously I never do. I know where I stand, and it is never a bad thing to submit to you.” The words, warm like a lover’s purr, were sending a pleasant heat curling up his spine leaving Sungkyu to wonder if they could get away with one of those wrestling matches at the current moment.

As if he just knew what they were contemplating, Sungyeol looked at them and narrowed his eyes. “If you are not going to help you are not going to share in the spoils!” he declared.

Woohyun laughed and untangled himself from his mate. “We’re coming,” he returned, pausing to close the remaining door on the van before heading to join the wolves.

“Good,” Sungyeol replied, his voice all business. “What is your skill level at snowmen building?”

“I, uh, what?” Sungkyu asked, surprised by the question. He glanced to his lover for support but Woohyun was already on his knees in the snow rolling a small ball of the white stuff across the surface.

“I said,” Sungyeol repeated drawing out each word as if Sungkyu had a hearing problem. “What. Skill. Do. You. Possess. When. It. Comes. To. Snowman. Building?”

“I’ve never built one,” he admitted. Having spent most of his memorable years in Sacramento California, it wasn’t as if there had ever been enough snow to try.

“Hopeless!” Sungyeol cried. “Why do they give me the hopeless new recruit? What did I do to deserve this?”

“Quit,” Hoya snapped, his voice close enough to an order that Sungyeol snapped his mouth shut. “He can collect with me. Come on.” Sungkyu kept his eyes carefully averted from the more dominate wolf, and nodded his assent of the suggestion.

“Get some good arms!” Sungyeol yelled at them as they moved to the forest, drawing a flippant wave over his shoulder from Hoya.

“It’s like this every year,” Hoya told him evenly as he eyed a large branch hanging just over their heads. “We can’t leave until 10am and we have until 6pm to get up here and build the best snowmen we can. Since we all live in the same apartment building we always end up on the same team. The teams compete and the winner as judged by Tablo and his mate, get free everything for the whole trip.”

The explanation made several things click in Sungkyu’s mind, primarily why they had sat in the van for six minutes before starting off on their trip. “Oh.”

“Don’t worry too much about it. Sungyeol gets into it, and Dongwoo likes playing in the snow. Woohyun is competitive enough that he lets Sungyeol pull him in. He will remember you exist when they are finished,” Hoya reassured him. He reached up and pulled on a half dead branch as thick around as his arm, snapping it easily from the tree that still clung to it. “Sungyeol will want anything that we can find that could be used as building materials.”

“Right,” Sungkyu nodded, and began scanning for anything that he had seen people in movies using to build the snowy creations.

An arm load of pine cones, small rocks, unique looking leaves, and a few twigs later, the pair emerged from the forest to find a lopsided mound of white, and two of the men rolling around in the snow. Dongwoo, uncaring of the tussle going on behind him was patting snow into the mound trying to shape it into something that resembled anything recognizable. Myungsoo sat beside him, watching the rolling pair with a lazy gaze.

“What is it this year?” Hoya asked, moving to the mound and dumping his armload of branches behind it.

“Something about the gender of the snowman,” Myungsoo said with a shrug.

“It looks funny,” Dongwoo, murmured with a pout.

“It looks fine,” Hoya told him, ruffling his hair with a tender affection.

“Can I?” Sungkyu asked tentatively, feeling silly for asking the most submissive wolf in their pack for permission as if he was afraid of what he would say.

“Sure!” Dongwoo said, brightening. “It is easy, just pat like this,” he demonstrated taking up a handful of snow in his gloved hand and patting it against the mound until it stuck.

“What are we making?” Sungkyu asked, mimicking the action.

“I was thinking we could make a knight on a horse,” Dongwoo told him with a smile.

“What is it?” Tablo asked, tilting his head to the side as if that would suddenly bring clarity to what he was looking at.

“It is a knight on a horse!” Sungyeol declared proudly. He had stopped rolling around with Woohyun long enough to help them shape a blob that somewhat resembled a horse beneath what appeared to be either a man who was largely overweight or was simply melting, just before Tablo had arrived.

“Really?” Tablo didn’t sound like he believed them in the slightest. “Since when does a horse have sticks sticking out of it all over the place?” he asked. His wife giggled at his side.

“That is his armor; it is designed to frighten the competitors!” Sungyeol explained.

“Oh,” Tablo said simply. “Well,” he sighed, “head to the lodge and results will be announced there.”

Sungkyu couldn’t help but smile at the excited chatter of his fellow wolves as they moved towards the van. Even if they didn’t win, which he was reasonably sure they wouldn’t, it was fun to have participated in the ritual of it anyway.

“You look happy,” Woohyun murmured as they slid in the back seat. His chilly fingers instantly wormed their way beneath Sungkyu’s warm coat.

“I am,” Sungkyu agreed, not minding the intrusion. “I had fun, and I’m glad you remembered I exist,” he teased.

“Uh yeah,” Woohyun replied, looking guilty. “Another reason I didn’t bring you before. I kinda get caught up in pack and you wouldn’t have understood that before now.”

“You’re right,” Sungkyu agreed, knowing the jealousy that he would have felt if he hadn’t experienced the pack bonds first hand. “But you are all mine tonight.”

“Whatever you want baby,” Woohyun purred, licking at the shell of his ear.

“Stop that,” Sungkyu swatted at the other man’s thigh, “not in the car with the others or I’ll turn you into a snowman.” Woohyun laughed, both of them knowing exactly how serious Sungkyu was about the threat, but somehow he managed to keep his hands to himself the rest of the way to the lodge.

They didn’t win, to say the least. Something about a mound of snow being called a horse and rider hadn’t stood a chance against the leaping ballerina the females had created. In fact he was pretty sure that they had even lost to the plain old regular snowman that the other guys had built. The results made Sungyeol pout the rest of the night but Sungkyu didn’t find that he minded the loss all that much. He found himself much too busy wrapped up in his mate for much of the evening and well into the night to care about anything, especially poorly made snowmen.

AN: And I'm still a day behind and probably will be all the way into the weekend unless something shocking happens... *sigh* At least I'm still writing these. Oh and excuse me muses... enough with the WooGyu! They aren't even my OTP! Share the spotlight a little!

Hehe I don't even mind that WooGyu have been hogging the spotlight - we got to see more of the pack members together in this one anyway! I have to say I love to see them all playing together like that, the way a certain submissive somehow manages to more or less boss everyone around amuses me to no end ^_^

Sungkyu's still so new, awk bless! He was so nervous around Hoya and even Dongwoo, I'm guessing that he still hasn't been around the rest of the pack that much yet? His story is really fasciniating, I'm not at all surprised you've been drawn to it lol.

My favourite bit was definitely the little insight into all their relationships though - the fact that Sungkyu was finding the others' interactions cute was just beyond precious! And I giggled a lot imagining their, uh, glorious knight, hehe. I bet it would have been fun to build though! *runs off to build a snowcastle with the muses*

Hehe It was so fun to write them all together. Really the submissive wolves have everyone else wrapped around their fingers because the more submissive a wolf is the more the dominate ones want to please them.

lol he is. He will settle down eventually but he is worried about riling the others since he can occasionally feel his own aggression. Yeah... I'll be elaborating on it eventually.

Sungkyu might be worried about them but he does find them fascinating and adorable. *snicker* I'm not that great of a snow builder. We built a unicorn one year and even made a huge mess with food coloring... it looked like a blob with a horn...

I just laughed too much for my own liking.

Can you just explain to me why they wouldn't have fought if there were submissive in the car? I didn't read the "original" fic with suju and dbsk, so that's probably why, but yeah, I'm kind of confused.
Kat Elrickat_elric on December 10th, 2011 03:30 pm (UTC)
Dominate wolves are aggressive and prone to butting heads once in a while. If the other wolves submit it is not problem but for wolves that are close in rank it can sometimes get violent. A submissive wolf doesn't pull forth the aggression because they would never challenge a dominate. The more submissive a wolf is the more relaxed the dominate ones get around them. Add to that the fact that all dominate wolves feel the intense need to protect a submissive, they would never start an aggressive confrontation in a small space where the submissives could be hurt by the fight. Dongwoo is about as submissive as they come and Hoya's (the most dominate wolf in the car mate) so there wasn't really a danger of a fight breaking out unless something threatened Dongwoo or Sungyeol. Then things would die...

Did that make any sense? ^^;

Oh. Ok, I understand.

Is your universe inspired from Teen Wolf? I watched a few episodes not a long time ago and there are some things that are a bit similar, so I was wondering, though I'm really not familiar with the series.

I actually have never seen Teen Wolf. This is inspired by a book series written by Patricia Briggs.
